The Pleasanton PTA Council announces its 2010 Speakers Series, in conjunction with Amador Valley Adult & Community Education. PTA Council & PUSD Adult Ed are partnering to present free parent education seminars chosen to address topical concerns of our families. 2009-10 Speakers:

The Power of Green and Red Language

REVISED DATE: Thursday, March 4, 6:30 to 8:30pm, Amador Valley High School Library

This class will teach parents a new way of communicating and will include practice in replacing everyday Red Language pitfalls with Green Language alternatives. Green Language is a type of communication that is free of the kinds of words that can imply negative or judgmental references. Red Language is a habitual way of speaking and thinking that raises stress levels and leads to controlling and out-of-control behavior.

Speaker: John Tompkins, Teen Edserve

Mr. Tompkins is a graduate of Stanford University, he is an ordained minister and a psychotherapist, father to six children, and consultant to major corporations and government facilities. Using Green Language approaches, He trains his clients to grow and prosper in relationships that are free of blame and drama.


How to Raise Fiscally Responsible Children

Whether your children are 5 or 15, it's never too late or too early to teach them the value of a dollar. Learn effective strategies to get your kids excited about money and what it can do for them!

Parenting an Anxious Child

Thursday, April 29, 2010 from 6:30 to 8:30pm, Amador Valley High Library

Parenting an anxious child is not easy, but anxious children can be helped to overcome their fears, and parents play an important part in the solution. Dr. Michael Tompkins describes the nature of childhood anxiety and describes several strategies for parenting the anxious child. Special attention is given to helping the clingy child, the shy child and the worrier.

Michael A. Tompkins, Ph.D. is a licensed psychologist, a founding partner of the San Francisco Bay Area Center for Cognitive Therapy, Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of California, Berkeley, and a Founding Fellow of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy. Dr. Tompkins specializes in the treatment of anxiety disorders and depression in adults, adolescents and children.
