VOLUNTEER HOURS CONTRIBUTED IN 2003/2004:

 

118,516 hours or 14,815 8-hour workdays contributed by PTA volunteers in PUSD.

 

PROGRAMS/INITIATIVES (2003/2004):

 

PROMOTING HEALTH & SAFETY:

 

·        Food Allergy Awareness

 

o       Co-sponsored food allergy meeting for parents with PUSD Food Services

o       Worked with PUSD staff to develop Food Allergy Policy #5536:  Management of Life Threatening Allergies adopted by Board on 11/18/03

o       Presented information on food allergy awareness and the “Protect a Life” (PAL) Program to a PUSD principals meeting

o       VP, Health & Education Services presented the “Protect a Life” (PAL) program to 481 students in 4 elementary schools (Fairlands, Lydiksen, Hearst and Mohr)

o       Sponsored a resolution which was adopted at the California State PTA Convention in May 2004 urging PTAs throughout the State to work with their schools and school districts to raise awareness and implement policies on managing food allergies in schools

·        Preventing Sexual Abuse

 

o       Co-sponsored a one-day forum with PUSD and Pleasanton Police on Preventing Child Sexual Abuse

o       Teachers attending received professional development credits

 

·        Public Access to Automatic External Defibrillators (AED)

 

o       Hosted a public forum with guest speakers from Project Adam

o       Worked with representatives of both local high schools to put defibrillators on their campuses for the safety of high school athletes and others

o       Presented information at Pleasanton Middle School PFA meeting on AED’s

o       Exploring various options with Valleycare Hospital for treadmill testing program for high school athletes

 

·        Sun Safety Awareness

 

o       PUSD received an award from the Billy Foundation for Sun Safety Community Caring as a result of cooperative efforts between PUSD and PTA representatives at Alisal and Council to implement shade structures at our schools

o       Talked about Sun Safety to high school students attending the annual Health Fair held at Foothill High School on April 1st – 280 students took the sun safety quiz and received free sunscreen samples

o       Met with a representative of the Pleasanton Aquatic Center about joint efforts to promote sun safety – will be implemented next year

 

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION & ACTION:

 

·        Go Green program implemented in all 8 PTA schools with support of the City of Pleasanton which provided a $45,000 grant

·        In the first 2 quarters of operation, the 8 schools collectively recycled:

o        97.8 tons of paper

o        2.25 tons of plastic

o        3.3 tons of aluminum

o        2,670 pounds of cardboard lunch trays

o       1,796 printer cartridges

o       501 cell phones

·        This translates to saving 1,176 trees

 

LEGISLATIVE ACTIONS:

 

·        Co-sponsored All-Candidates forum for PUSD School Board Candidates with League of Women Voters in September 2003 – this was well attended by members of the community and was broadcast numerous times on CTV.

 

·        Legislative Action on Key Educational and Childhood Health & Safety Issues:

o       Video Game Violence bills (Yee)

o       Supported Propositions 55, 56, 57 & 58 on March 2004 ballot

o       Class size reduction (Sher)

o       Student interrogation bill (Steinberg)

o       Instructional Materials bill (Scott)

o       Pupil Medications (Ashburn)

o       Provided input to PUSD regarding competitive food sales and food brought from home policies

o       Issued 3 Legislative Updates of current issues to members and posted on website

 

CHARACTER EDUCATION:

 

·        Offered $200 to each PTA school for student outreach projects demonstrating aspects of the community of character traits

·        Made possible through the generation donation of Masterpiece Cookies

·        Examples of the student projects funded include:

o       Purchasing DVD’s and videos for Children’s area at Valleycare Hospital

o       Running a book drive for the Children’s Hospital in Oakland

o       Buying healthy food for children coming to school hungry

o       Planting a school garden

o       Sending materials to a school in Liberia through the “Hands across the Water” program

o       Supporting the Pleasanton Police’s “Giving Tree” program at Christmas

o       Prize money for the “Laws of Life” Essay contest offered to Amador, Village & Horizon students by the Amador PTSA

 

PARENT EDUCATION:

 

o       Advertised Adult Ed classes on our website and through our email newsletters and at our Council meetings

o       Co-sponsored Steve Seskin event in April 2004

o       Hosted guest speakers at our Council meetings on topics including:

§         Childhood ergonomic safety

§         Childhood wellness:  nutrition and fitness

 

SUPPORTING THE ARTS: 

 

o       The Reflections Arts Recognition programs sponsored by our local PTA’s generated 161 entries from students at Mohr Elementary, Walnut Grove Elementary, Harvest Park Middle and Amador Valley High Schools in the areas of visual arts, photography, music and literature

o       Students whose work was being forwarded to the next level (Peralta District) were recognized in a ceremony at Harvest Park on January 22nd

o       Two of our students received recognition at the State level:  Amy Seaver, a senior at Amador Valley High School for visual arts and Ashley Song, a first grader from Mohr Elementary for Visual Arts.

 

 

TRAINING OF PTA OFFICERS:

 

o       Held a training for financial officers in May 2004

o       Hosted an information sharing session for unit officers in February 2004

o       Included opportunities for unit sharing at various Council meetings

 

COMMUNICATIONS:

 

·        Developed a website at www.pleasantonpta.org

·        Sent out 21 email newsletters to Council executive officers and unit presidents (both PTA and non-PTA schools)

·        Issued 13 press releases on PTA Council programs and events

 

OTHER:

 

·        Participated in First Wednesday events and the Bernal Block Party

·        Sent 11 representatives from Pleasanton to the California State PTA Convention in Long Beach, May 2004
