National PTA Art Award to Pleasanton First Grader

Pleasanton first grader Megan Tien, of Mohr Elementary School, has been recognized at the national level for her colorful artwork interpreting the theme “A Different Kind of Hero” in the National PTA Reflections Program.  Megan used watercolor and crayon to show a crossing guard in front of her school and received an Award of Merit, one of the top eight awards in the country for the primary division in the visual art category.  She was honored in person in a moving ceremony in front of thousands of delegates at the State PTA Convention in Sacramento on Saturday, April 30.

The National PTA Reflections Program is an art recognition and achievement program for students in literature, photography, music composition and visual arts.  Although projects are judged and advance from school to council, district, state and national levels, the goal is participation and appreciation of the arts for all students.  All eight Pleasanton PTA schools participated this year with 283 total entries from kindergarten to twelfth grade students.  Debbie Look, President of the Pleasanton PTA Council, emphasized that the PTA is a strong supporter of arts in the schools and that the council is proud to sponsor this valuable program.
