FEBRUARY 6, 2004
On February 2nd, the Pleasanton PTA Council ratified the position taken by the California State PTA in supporting Propositions 55 & 56 slated for the March 2nd California Primary Election.
Proposition 55, a $12.3 billion bond measure designed to address K-12 and post-secondary classroom construction and modernization, is critically needed to ensure that all California students have sufficient, safe places to learn. We know that safer, less crowding learning environments improve student achievement. In Pleasanton, the success of Proposition 55 is critical to ensuring that Pleasanton Unified School District receives State funding for priority projects including the modernization of Donlon Elementary and Lydiksen Elementary.
Proposition 56, the Budget Accountability Act, is designed to hold legislators accountable to pass a budget on time. Pleasanton PTA Council agrees that this measure is vitally important to the school districts. Without timely information on state budget allocations, school districts cannot effectively plan for staffing and other expenditures to meet the needs of our students. Programs for the upcoming school year are put into jeopardy.
The Pleasanton PTA Council also took a position supporting both Proposition 57: Bonds to Help State Budget and Proposition 58: Requiring a Balanced Budget. Both of these measures are critical to ensure that school districts, including Pleasanton Unified School District, do not have to make serious cuts to educational programs and services for the 2004/2005 school year.
Dr. John Casey,
Superintendent of the Pleasanton Unified School District and a voting member of
the Pleasanton PTA Council, voted in favor of PTA’s support of these four
propositions and noted that “The successful passage of these four propositions
represents, at this time, our best chance of maintaining programs and staff
across the district.“.
We encourage all members of our community to vote on March 2nd and to give serious consideration to these bond measures to ensure that all of our children have safe places to learn and that their educational success is not jeopardized by a lack of State funding.
