The Pleasanton Legislative Action Committee for Education (PLACE) started what became known as the PPIE award. Original PLACE members included Cindy McGovern, Juanita Haugen, Sue Rose, Sandy Dibias, Mary Pat Hawkins, and Judy Ditter Wheeler.

This group of dedicated parents and community members originally formed to follow bills that affected education through the legislature. An idea was hatched to honor the outstanding people in the school district — both certificated and non-certificated.

After Pleasanton Partnerships In Education (PPIE) was formed, the PPIE director, Donna McMillion, picked up the baton and took over the Awards, taking it to the next level in community recognition. The last Excellence in Education Award under PPIE was given in 2004.

In the spring of 2007, the Pleasanton PTA Council and the Pleasanton Unified School District partnered to bring back the Excellence in Education Awards.
